5 Ways to Generate Buzz

“An individual artist needs only a thousand true fans in her tribe. It’s enough.” -Seth Godin

We’ve created a expectation in business about generating buzz about our brands and products via social media.

While this whole concept has paid the bills for me at times, it’s a labor of love at best. In the past year there have been numerous requests to “create some buzz.” So are here some thoughts on this idea:

-buzz, should be replaced by consistent messaging.

-buzz, should be replaced by engaging your tribe and uncovering where they live

-buzz, is not a magical process.

-buzz, while some of us might have a Klout profile that says “Broadcaster” there is no substitute for strategy, planning, and hustle.

-buzz, should be measured, and not always repeated

What are you doing to control the buzz?

Taking a Digital Sabbath: Introducing #noscreensundays

Posted by Jim

Last week I saw the follow tweet from my friend @ErikLokkesome

This weekend, my family and I activated #noscreensunday.

For our family this meant no updates via laptops to Facebook, Twitter, blogs, etc. We did find that there is a need to discuss and adapt your own guidelines. An example is mobile devices. Three of us have touchscreen devices which allow us to use many different social networks, but while we all agree to not update, we will still use the phones.

I found it refreshing and I can say that I left my Mac closed until 10 p.m. last night as this is my blogging time.

So…I issue a challenge…who is up for #noscreensunday? What about those of you who do church online? Can we truly be unplugged? Is this a necessary movement? Let’s discuss.

Clip from Dr. Scott Todd’s provocative short film “The Poor Will Not Always Be With Us.” Dr. Todd looks into the context of scripture and asks the church to look further at the resources God has provided to end extreme economic poverty in our lifetime.

Wednesday: Inspired by Listening

Last week I was in Las Vegas to hang out with Jake Bodine from God Behind Bars. Saturday night we attended a service at Florence-McClure Women’s Correctional Center. 250+singing inmates was epic! Afterwards, an inmate named Camille told me two things:

-”What you are seeing here is real. These ladies are not fronting you.Everyone really wants to be here.”

-”God Behind Bars is the most talked about thing inside the prison”

Last night I was in Portland for a listening session/panel for Christianity Today’s “This is Our City” project. The meeting was moderated by Skye Jethani and Christy Tennant. I heard the following statement:

-”We feel like God is running his hand through Portland right now.”

What have you heard lately that has left you inspired?
